Introduction: A Rising Star in Nigerian Music

Towards the end of 2021, a fresh voice emerged in the Nigerian music scene under Mr Eazi’s emPawa label. Unlike most breakout artists whose names spread as fast as their music, Fave remained a mystery to many. Instead, listeners latched onto the infectious chorus of her viral song, “Baby Riddim.”

Fast forward to January 2022, and she has officially announced her arrival with her debut EP, Riddim 5. At just 22 years old, Fave blends the soulful depth of Adele with the Afro-soul richness of Tems, creating a unique mid-tempo ponpon Afropop sound that’s smooth, emotive, and effortlessly captivating.

Production: A Fusion of African and Western Elements

Fave, along with producers Dammie, Krizbeatz, Niphkeys, and Saszy, ensures that her sound stays true to her African roots while incorporating global influences. While the EP leans on Nigeria’s ponpon beat, it shifts focus from heavy percussion to a more refined arrangement of cellos, violins, and grand pianos. This choice gives the project an Adele-like depth while maintaining an African bounce through subtle Banku rhythms and contemporary Afrobeats.

In terms of vocals, Fave understands her range. Rather than attempting the soaring high notes of Western ballads, she sticks to a warm, mid-pitch delivery that complements the mellow, rhythmic beats. Her voice glides over the production effortlessly, making each song feel intimate yet universally relatable.

Themes: Love in Different Shades

Love is at the heart of Riddim 5, but Fave approaches it from different angles—devotion, infatuation, and emotional vulnerability.

“Mr Man” – Love Without Words

One of the standout tracks, “Mr Man,” explores the story of a reserved lover who struggles to express himself verbally. Fave reassures him through her lyrics, embracing his quiet nature and showing her willingness to meet him at his level.

“Baby Riddim” – Unshaken Commitment

The song that introduced Fave to the world, “Baby Riddim,” is a passionate tribute to love. She describes her feelings as uncontrollable, likening herself to a thief constantly falling for her man. Despite external discouragement, she boldly declares her unwavering devotion, calling him the “good, bad, and total package” of a man.

“Obsessed” – Love as an Addiction

Opening the EP, “Obsessed” is a confessional song that dives into the overwhelming nature of infatuation. With thoughts of her lover consuming her mind every moment, the track captures the intensity of attachment that comes with deep emotions.

Final Thoughts: A Strong Debut for Fave

With Riddim 5, Fave delivers a beautifully curated love playlist that blends soulful melodies with Afrobeat rhythms. This EP is not just a debut—it’s a statement. It solidifies her position as a rising star, proving that Nigerian female artists are just as formidable as their male counterparts when given the right platform.

As Valentine’s season approaches, Riddim 5 is bound to find its way into the hearts—and playlists—of many.
