Diamond in the Sky Review
With Oloture the movie sensitizing people about human trafficking, Diamond in the sky sensitizes people about another plague in the society. Diamond in the sky is a movie which was directed by award winning Kunle Afolayan and it is a bitter sweet experience watching these movie.
Produced by Femi Adebayo and is backed up by the Leah Foundation: a nongovernmental organization that is motivated with the mission to initiate and implement strategies to deal with cultural, socio-economic and political issues militating against the development of the youths, women and children in Kwara State Nigeria. On a scale of 1-10, I will give it 7.8 because just like any script is entitled to have proper understanding and portrayal, the crew of this movie did well and should be applauded.
THE PLOT
The movie is centered on three ladies who were diagnosed of different types of cancer. The lead roles which was played by Joke Silva, Bimbo Akintola and Omowunmi Dada portrays three women of three separate ages and how they deal with the reality of having cancer.
The twist in the movie is that one of the ladies was about to get married when she was diagnosed with this terminal disease. The story sheds light on how she and her partner tries to deal with this unplanned issues. Also imagine a lady who has gone past menopause menstruating. That was the case of another lady who was diagnosed of cervical cancer. The last lady in the equation of things is a lady that was diagnosed with breast cancer and the trauma of losing her pair of breast to the disease. Funded by Leah foundation, they used this movie to advertise to the world that cancer is not the end of the road for anybody.
THE HIGHS AND LOWS
Applauds has to go to the cinematography crew. It’s a huge relief from the conventional Nollywood productions. The angles of shots where really creative and unique to the movie. In close relation to the good cinematography is the Editorial job. The editing is fantastic, especially the last 25 minutes of the movie where they were telling the stories of three persons simultaneously. In terms of inter scene switch, it was satisfying to see that one didn’t see Lekki bridge or street movements as a breaker between each scenes. Those repeated inter scenes in Nigerian movies can be very annoying.
In terms of directing and casting, I could say they did a relatively great job. Femi Adebayi and Kunle Afolayan did a nice job in selecting vintage Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola and Joke Silva for their lead roles. They bossed the roles and should applauded for their near perfect portrayal of the roles. Stars like, Yvonne Jegede, Toyin Aimakhu, Ali Nuhu, Femi Adebayo, Kayode Olaiya, Omowunmi Dada and a host of others are too good a squad for just a single movie. And just like always Kule Afolayan did well in his control and harnessing of characters from these actors and actresses.
In reverse case, there was only a slight miss in the directorial interpretation of a particular scene. In a scene with Kayode Olaiya aka Baba Supo, there was a slight mix up. Kayode Olaiya has no business coming out of the vehicle to greet his in-law in the first place, those conversations should have happened in the car. It would have been better if the in-law didn’t notice him. Apart from that little glitch, the story and interpretation is 100%. It was a successful campaign and awareness against Cancer, very educative!
I think AMAA should include a category that encourages Education and Sensitization, just to encourage people to produce more educative movies.
